The Yiddish Policemen's Union Poster
In my fan art depiction of a movie poster for Michael Chabon's novel, I sought to depict the themes of despair and bureaucracy. I found that the game of chess was the best device as it lends itself to iconography and is a big proponent of the character's lives.
I was focusing on creating a title design that would emulate the middle eastern and soviet travel posters of the early 20th century from my inspiration board as well as creating a mood indicative of mid century noir crime film posters.
Having first designed the title by hand, I decided the type would be the focal point of the poster. My early compositions involved dimensional perspectives but it felt like it was not on the same visual plane as my title, so my final version minimizes this.
